In this letter, we present an innovative framework for real-time texture tracking and weave pattern recognition. Our framework includes a module for motion estimation using blob detection and feature matching. It also includes a module for lattice detection to facilitate the weave pattern recognition. Our lattice-detection algorithm utilizes blob detection and template matching to assess pair-wise similarity in blobs’ appearance. In addition, it extracts information of dominant orientations to obtain a global constraint in the topology.

Automated sewing is a complicated task in manufacturing. This paper presents a strategy for velocity synchronization and corner matching in an automated sewing cell based on two industrial manipulators and a sewing machine. A hybrid force/motion control scheme is adopted using feedback from force/torque sensors for tension control and optical sensors to control the seam position. The strategy is based on switching between force control and displacement control using a leader/follower coordination scheme. This addresses the problem of corner mismatch occurring when two independent force controllers are used for controlling the two robots. Experiments verify that the proposed method gives a satisfactory corner matching, which is crucial for the presented sewing case.

A force feedback system combined with optical edge sensors is evaluated for the control of the sewing process. The force sensors are used to synchronize the velocity and feed rate between the robots and the sewing machine. A test cell was built to determine the feasibility of the force feedback control and velocity synchronization. Experiments are presented which investigate the ability of the robot to feed a hide part into the sewing machine using a force sensor and different strategies for velocity synchronization.

Here, we present a facile method for rapid fabrication of low-cost, stretchable electrical interconnections for wearable electronics. Using a commercial sewing machine, thin metallic wires are sewn onto the wearable materials in a double-stitch zigzag pattern, with the second stitch being a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thread. The stretchable pattern is secured onto a clothing with a stretchable elastomer coating followed by dissolution of the PVA thread in water. As a proof of concept implementation, we sewed interconnects and a soft capacitive force sensor onto a latex glove to create a wearable tactile sensor with a linear sensitivity of 96 F/N.
